Melos Music - Second Annual New Music Concert - San Francisco, CA 2011
Melos Music is a collective of composers from across the United States who collaborate to create, publish, concertize, and advance new music to a global community. Each year, works by Melos members are performed in hundreds of concerts, and as a result, both the group and its individual members are beginning to attract significant attention in the U.S. and abroad. Our members have a sincere passion for contemporary music and for collaborating with other musicians in an array of diverse aesthetic styles.
Compositions and creative projects by Melos composers have been supported by many important arts organizations including ASCAP, Meet the Composer, the American Music Center, the American Composers Forum, the American Composers Orchestra, the Theodore Presser Foundation, the Music Teacher's National Association, the Mid-American Center for Contemporary Music, and others. In addition, individual Melos composers have received support for their creative work in the form of Fulbright Fellowships, Rhodes Scholarships, and fellowships at the MacDowell Colony. Furthermore, nearly all of Melos's composers have received fellowships and commissions from leading music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Composer's Conference at Wellesley College, the Brevard Music Center, the European American Musical Alliance, the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, the FuBis Academy in Berlin, June in Buffalo, and others.
With a diverse array of works composed in different mediums, the Melos Music catalogue has grown to include substantial pieces in virtually every genre. Orchestral works by Melos composers have been performed by professional music organizations including the Nashville Symphony, and the Buffalo Philharmonic, as well as by leading collegiate orchestras including the Eastman Philharmonia, and the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra. Wind Ensemble and Band works from the Melos catalogue have been performed in the United States, Canada, and Japan by professional, collegiate, and student ensembles, while Choral, Operatic, and Art Song compositions from Melos's composers receive dozens of annual performances around the world. Additionally, many leading new music ensembles have performed chamber music by Melos's composers including the Argento Ensemble, the Cygnus Ensemble, Da Capo Chamber Players, Ensemble Dal Niente, the Fifth House Ensemble, the Jack Quartet, the Momenta Quartet, the Talea Ensemble, and many others. In the realm of electro-acoustic music, Melos composers have been featured at major festivals including the soundSCAPE Festival (Italy), the International Computer Music Conference (England), the New York City Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, the Cybersounds Festival (Philadelphia, PA), and the SEAMUS National Conference (Miami, FL).
Melos Music has worked to reach audiences in the United States and abroad, by providing audiences with the opportunity to experience new works, as well as to actively promote the appreciation, patronage, and understanding of contemporary concert music and living composers. As our members have regular performances of their works as part of professional recital series and prominent music conventions in major cities across the U.S., as well as radio broadcasts, internet webcasts, and professional recordings of their compositions, Melos is quickly establishing itself as an important arts organization featuring some of America's most talented rising composers.
